Patios

Specializing in small to medium patios (100 to 1,000 sq. ft.), constructed with Flagstone , E.P. Henry interlocking pavers, and Brick.  Patios and walks are blended into existing grade with a minimum of disturbance to surrounding lawns and gardens, and the proper pitch  (approximately 1½% to 2% grade) set to appear level and still drain water away from the house.
Pennsylvania flagstone 1½ inches thick is installed on a compacted based of modified and screened stone. Stones come in various shades of gray which may have tints of blue (bluestone), green, tan, brown, rust, and plum mixed with the gray.   We individually select the stones to insure quality and desired color range. Stones are also individually installed at the proper grade.
E. P. Henry concrete paver patio are installed over a compacted base of modified stone, and tamped into of bed of sand.  Pavers come in a large range of colors and styles.  With so much variety, they can work with almost any project.   Pavers are made of concrete instead of clay and do not absorb as much water as traditional brick; therefore algae is not as much of a problem in shady areas as it can be with brick.  Click here to see best practices we use to construct a good patio as taught by EP Henry and used by the top Hardscapers and Landscapers.  Please view some examples of the various colors and different patterns that can be used on our Paver Colors Page. .
Paving brick is installed over a compacted base of modified and screened stone with many available patterns and styles.  Brick can be formed in a mold or wire cut during it formation for very different looks.  You can find more information on various types of brick on the
Glen-Gery web site.

Walls

Specializing in small to medium sized walls (under 4 foot).  Walls are constructed with the proper batter and engineering for the material used.
E. P. Henry Segmental Retaining Walls or Interlocking Block Wall Systems can be used for a long-lasting and nicely textured wall.  English Garden Wall or NurseryStone, TerraceWall, StoneWall Select or Diamond Pro, and Coventry Wall  give you 4 different styles of walls and come in a large variety of colors.  Click here to see the best practices we use to construct a good wall  as taught by EP Henry and used by the top Hardscapers and Landscapers.  Click here to see examples of these walls on our Interlocking Block Wall Systems Page.
Many types of natural stone are readily available for layered stone walls.  Stone Walls can be built with mortar (requires footing), or as a dry wall (more economical).  Stone is the oldest and most durable of building materials.
Click here for more information on stone walls.
Pressure treated softwood ties are now guaranteed to last 40 years or more, outlasting older hardwood ties, and have a much cleaner appearance than old used railroad ties common in the past.  These are our most economical walls.  We build our tie walls with proper batter and pitch and tie keys into the hill to ensure a long lasting wall.  Click here for additional information on our tie wall page.

Steps & Landings

We can construct steps and landings with many different materials.  The height and length of the hill is measured to determine the number of steps, the height of each riser, and the length of each tread.   Steps can be constructed with brick or flagstone on a concrete and cinder block foundation for steps that should last for generations.
Bricks and flagstone as well as various colored bullnose pavers and different textured concrete wall caps could be used as treads on segmental retaining wall risers.  These steps are constructed on a 6-inch base of compacted crushed stone, and at least 8-inches of wall stones below grade, but they do not require a concrete foundation so they are more economical than masonry  steps.
Click here to see best practices of good step construction as taught by EP Henry and used by the top Hardscapers and Landscapers on our Step Construction page.
Pressure treated softwood ties can also be used to make nice steps with either six inch risers. Ties can also be combined with brick or flagstone as the tread.  Ties are anchored to the ground with 2-foot reinforcing rods and are nailed together with 40-penny galvanized nails.  Ties from lower steps extend under upper step but no additional foundation is used so these step are the most economical.
All steps and landings shown were constructed by Robert J. Kleinberg Landscape Design and Construction.  He is an ICPI Certified Concrete Paver Installer and a NCMA Certified Segmental Retaining Wall Installer.  He is also an EP Henry Authorized Hardscaping Contractor, and has been designing and constructing patios, steps and landings, and gardens in Philadelphia, Montgomery County ( Lower Merion, Bala Cynwyd, Ardmore, Narberth ), Delaware County ( Havertown, Marple, Drexel Hill, Lansdowne, Springfield, Swarthmore, Ridley, Media, Upper Darby, Newtown Square, Radnor ), and the Main Line ( Bryn Mawr, Villanova, Gladyne, Wynnewood ) PA as a Landscape and Hardscaping contractor since 1986.

Landscaping

Robert J. Kleinberg, Landscape Design & Construction has been designing Patios and Gardens in Philadelphia, Montgomery County,  Delaware County and the Main Line PA since 1986.  We offer  Landscape Design and Installation, either Residential or Commercial; including new plantings, or renovations of old landscapes.  We install trees, shrubs, seasonal plantings of annuals and perennials from a small backyard to a large commercial planting.  Robert Kleinberg is a Horticulturist with degrees from The University of Delaware and Villanova University.

Landscape Design

Proper placement of trees and shrubs is our first step.  Plants are spaced to allow for future growth without overcrowding.  Many factors are also considered such as leaf and flower color, fragrance, berries, texture and more.  Good landscape design provides the framework to build on with seasonal color from perennials, annuals and bulbs.  Whether commercial or residential, the design must consider which views are most important to the owner, (inside looking out, or outside the property looking in) which seasons are most important to the owner, and many other factors such as favorite plants and favorite colors.

See the difference good landscaping can make.  Click here for more information on our landscaping services.
