Seasonal Color Plantings

Robert J. Kleinberg, Landscape Design & Construction has been designing Patios and Gardens in Philadelphia, Montgomery County,  Delaware County and the Main Line PA since 1986.   With a good structure of trees and shrubs in place, the final step is the addition of color with perennials, bulbs and annuals.  These finishing touches are often the most noticed part of a landscape.  Color schemes can change with the season and can be changed year to year if desired.  Plants in a given location are chosen by preferences for sun or shade and other factors, but sometimes experimentation can yield surprising results.  Pansies, Tulips and other bulbs in spring;   Impatients, Caladiums, Geraniums, Marigolds and other annuals in summer;  Mums in fall, along with pansies and colorful kale and cabbages right through the winter.   Add to this, dependable long lasting perennials for a property you and your neighbors can enjoy year round.

Please view various examples of our seasonal plantings below.  Pictures here show the same area at different times of the year.  For a look at individual seasonal plants see the seasonal plants page.  Pictures from Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia are from 1986 to 1996.  For more information about our work at Presbyterian Hospital please see our about us page.

Main Entrance Planting

Shown here is the entrance to the main complex at Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia.  This entrance is the first thing seen when entering the main complex and for this reason it is given a high priority with the plantings changed seasonally for the best first impression of the facility.  This area receives full sun most of the day and plants are chosen with that in mind.  The before shot is the circle after a renovation without any seasonal color.  Other pictures show the same location at different seasons and years.  Ground level pictures were taken before the renovation and have the shrubs closer to the seasonal planting.  The color in the summer pictures come mostly from marigolds and celosia which are annuals and must be replanted each year.  Cabbages in the fall must also be replanted each year, but tulips in spring will return each year if the soil is to there liking.

Side Entrance Planting

This secondary entrance to the same area shown above is shaded more than the main entrance and calls for different plants that can thrive with less sun.  Impatients planted here for summer color usually lasted well into the fall.  Pansies can be planted in fall and can last right through spring, so only two plantings were needed to cover most of the year.  Pansies and impatients are annuals and must be replanted each year.

Street Side Planting

This planting is on Filbert St in Philadelphia, just west of 38th St.  It borders a parking garage and we transplanted most of the shrubs in this bed from another area of the property to make room for new construction.  The first picture from late winter shows the planting without much color.  The daffodils and cherry trees are just starting to bloom.  Most of the color in the next picture from spring comes from azaleas.  The color in these first two pictures will return each year.  The color in the last two pictures is mostly from marigolds in summer and these must be replanted each year.
